MVA Historian

What responsibilities does that entail: “I’m the Historian, but I haven’t had the opportunity to carry out any assignments, since I was appointed right before the Summer 2012 break. I’m waiting to get a run down from my Chain of Command, as to what responsibilities they want me to take on.”

What drew you to the MVA: “As a Veteran, I saw an e-mail that described what the MVA represented and how to get involved. This was at the beginning of this year, so I’m new to the MVA.”

Why should other UTEP students join the MVA: “ It gives you an opportunity to discuss issues that have effected you or get information on services that might be available to you as a Veteran. The MVA also gives you an opportunity to reach out to fellow Veterans and help them with any issues or obstacles they might be facing.”

What brought you to El Paso/UTEP: “I’m a UTEP Alumni, so it was an easy decision.”

Major: “Digital Media Production (this is my second B.A., I received my first B.A. from UTEP in 1996 – B.A. Criminal Justice)”

Hobbies and interests: “I’m a former professional fighter, so I train amateur and professional boxers as my job. I love photography, and anything related to digital media. I also love to play golf.”

Short bio (military/non-military): “I served in the U.S. Navy for 12 years over a span of 29 years. I served from 1983-1987; and went back into the USNR in 2003 after 9/11. I was mobilized to the Middle East, and served a tour for a year. I’m a decorated Veteran, and an Operation Iraqi Freedom Veteran. I reached the rank of E-6 (First Class Petty Officer), and served on three Admiral Staff’s during my active duty years (83-87).

I am married, have a 3-year old daughter (Shae), and I’m a professional/amateur boxing trainer. I fought in the Olympic Trials in 1992, and reached the quarter-finals. I then turned professional, had 25 professional fights, and retired after my last fight against current Heavyweight Champion of the World, Vitali Klitschko. In 2004 I was inducted into the El Paso Boxing Hall of Fame.”

Short and long-term goals: “Short term goal is to get my second B.A. by the end of 2013, and then apply to Graduate School. My long term goal is to start my own production company, and help promote athletes who want to compete at the next level by documenting their accomplishments and training through video, and to put together video resumes for athletes.”
